WELCOME TO POP’S WOOD SHACK

POP’s WOOD SHACK, founded in early 2024. We are a merchandising branding company, which occasionally makes wood products. We are following our passions and digging deep into our family tree. Thank you for the support and for following our journey.

JAMES (AKA- POP) MCDONAGH

James (Pop) McDonagh was an immigrant from County Galway, Ireland who lived from 1892-1977.

He was my great grandfather on my mother’s side.

As a child he fell into Galway Bay and was rescued.

He took the long journey to America in the early 1900s.

He was a small business owner of a pet shop in New York City during the great depression.

He created his way in an era when the Irish were discriminated against.

Allegedly, members of the Mafia would come in to purchase messenger pigeons from his pet store.

He had a pet Monkey in the pet shop.

He was a tinkerer and inventor.

He was such a kind-hearted man.

He was a friend to animals.

He is a family legend.

Before He Became The Family Legend.

When you say the word Pop, everyone in my family has a story.

It’s an older nickname full of history and all of our ears perk up at family gatherings when it is said.

Pop lived during extremely difficult times, he lost a wife and the mother of his children to TB when she was just 29 years old.

His second wife once burned their marriage certificate in a fire after a fight, that must have been some fight!

A True Maker And Friend To The Animals

He built a wood shack on some land in Closter, New Jersey. This later inspired him with the confidence to build his own home on this land. As a child, this was always unimaginable, almost too much legend.

He was a gardener, family man, and never stopped dreaming of little wooden inventions that would make your life easier.

When my mom talks about Pop, she always references how gentle he was. Pop used to build bird houses for expecting bird mothers with little wooden fences so that the bird babies would not fall out of the house. Who has the heart to do this?

Pop was a true friend of the animals.

The Original Pop Clip

I am Pop’s Great Grandson James Calder, his daughter was my grandmother. I always showed an interest in woodworking and tinkering, and figuring things out myself. Apparently that was POP. My grandma often told me I reminded her of her father.

When Grandma passed away and we were cleaning out her house, I discovered this little gem and kept it.

On the back it says James McDonagh 1975, which means he was tinkering until the end (which inspires me most!). In 1975, it was probably meant for keeping the bills you needed to pay in order on your desk.

We Are Bringing Back Pop’s Clips!

For the past 15 years I discovered a more modern use for it.

It is perfect for keeping my laptop cords from constantly falling off the desk every time you move around the house.

Try it on your nightstand for easy access to your phone charger, every time.
